The TsKB-55 served as the initial prototype for the Il-2 series, developed starting in 1939. It featured armored protection surrounding the engine, cockpit, and vital systems—a revolutionary concept at the time. Powered by a Mikulin AM-38 engine, the prototype laid the foundation for a durable, ground-attack aircraft intended to withstand intense frontline fire. Flight testing proved promising, but the aircraft was refined heavily before mass production began.
