The Sho’t was the Israeli designation for the British Centurion main battle tank, which entered service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1960. Israel began acquiring Centurion tanks from the United Kingdom as part of a broader effort to modernize its armored forces following the 1950s. The Centurion was already regarded as one of the most capable tanks of the early Cold War, combining strong armor protection, good mobility, and powerful armament. In Israeli service, the tank was upgraded with the 105 mm L7 rifled gun, one of the most effective tank guns of its era.

Israeli engineers made several modifications to adapt the Centurion to local conditions and operational doctrine. These upgrades included improved communications equipment, updated fire-control systems, and later more powerful engines that enhanced mobility in desert environments. These modifications produced variants such as the Sho’t Kal, which incorporated a diesel engine and improved mechanical reliability. Israeli crews valued the tank for its durability and its ability to maintain accurate fire even under difficult battlefield conditions.

The Sho’t played a central role in several major Middle Eastern conflicts. It saw combat during the Six-Day War in 1967, where Israeli armored forces achieved rapid victories against neighboring armies. The tank’s most dramatic service occurred during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, particularly during the Battle of the Golan Heights, where outnumbered Israeli Centurion units fought intense defensive battles against large Syrian armored formations. Despite heavy losses, the Sho’t demonstrated exceptional resilience and firepower. Over time, the platform remained in Israeli service for decades, reflecting the adaptability and enduring effectiveness of the Centurion design.
